New Tenda network products arrive at PCFOOD

...Today I have been trying out the Tenda W541U V2.0, this is a USB wireless adapter which connects to WiFi b and g networks (IEEE 802.11bg and IEEE 802.11g.).

When you open up the product's packaging you may be quite shocked to see how little there is inside, in fact you get a CD-ROM and the USB adapter, if you want to read the product's manual it can be found on the disc.

The adapter itself has a very solid plastic housing and there is an LED which blinks when there is activity, also on the underside of the dongle there are details such as its model number and MAC address.

When I plugged it into my Windows 7-based computer it automatically installed itself and was ready to go in roughly 2 minutes, on my XP-based computer installation required the CD-ROM and took roughly 5 minutes.

The standard installation installs the Tenda wireless utility, this is useful on older computers which run Windows 2000, however I prefer to allow Windows to manage my connections, the Tenda software can be useful if you want to see full details regarding connections speeds or perhaps set it up as an access point.

In terms of signal strength and connection speed there are no real surprises, using the USB adapter I got roughly the same connections speed as my DLink PCI WiFi card, I used the USB adapter for 8 hours with no connection loss which proves the hardware and drivers are both stable.

There is not much else you can say about this USB adapter, it is cheap, easy to install, well-made and has pretty strong signal W541U V2.0 here.

The PC standby control unit will automatically cut off the electricity to your computer and all your connected peripheral equipment. This would be your scanner, printer, speakers, table lamp etc. Also it is possible to add further equipment by adding an extension socket to one of the sockets on the unit.

The main control PC/ laptop is plugged into the control socket, your peripheral equipment is connected to the auto ON/OFF sockets. Place the control switch in a convenient position next to your PC. There is an adhesive patch on the bottom of the control switch to secure it if required.

When the PC is turned off the unit senses the drop in power levels and will automatically cut the power to the PC and the auto sockets for the peripheral equipment.

WATTSCLEVER STANDBY CONTROL SOCKET With REMOTE

The standby control socket allows you to turn the power to your appliances and equipment on and off by remote control. Each socket learns the code from the button/channel on the remote control transmitter that you assign to that socket. This is very simple to do and can be changed at any time.

Once this is done you can then turn the power supply to any equipment connected to the socket on or off from a distance, just by pressing a button. This makes it very simple to turn many pieces of equipment off from a single remote control unit. No more excuses for not turning off the TV, Hi Fi, lamps etc.

Once turned off they will use no electricity, so no more standby energy is been wasted. You can add additional sockets later and use then with the same remote control unit.
